Reversing the tables on the do shell script command is the osacompile shell command This command allows you to run AppleScript scripts from the command line The osacompile command can run scripts in two ways: it can run the actual code you supply as a string, or it can run a script stored in a file, either as text or as a compiled script For example, to execute a script right from the command line, use -e, followed by the script in quoted string form The following shell script will tell iTunes to start playing: osascript -e 'tell app "iTunes" to play' You can supply multiple lines of script by including more -e options, each one followed by a line of code.

The following shell script will run a four-line AppleScript that will activate the Finder and display an alert showing the name of disk 1: osascript -e 'tell app "Finder"' -e 'activate' -e 'display alert (get name of disk 1)' -e 'end tell' Note how the script lines are quoted with single quotes To run a script stored in a file, you specify the file path right after the command For this example, I created a text file with the text return (get current date as string) and then saved it in my user directory with the name my scriptapplescript The following shell script will run it and as a result return the current date to the command line: osascript 'my scriptapplescript' You can also pass parameters to the script s run handler.

osascript will compile script in the text file and call its run handler, passing it the list {"My Cool Folder"} as its parameter. The script in turn will loop through each item in this list, creating a new folder on the desktop and using the string as the name of the folder. To pass multiple parameters, separate each argument in the osacompile command with a space. Other AppleScript-related commands, which I won t be covering here, are osalang, which lists all the open scripting architecture (OSA) languages you have installed, and osacompile, which compiles text and saves it as a compiled script.
